From Publishers Weekly
Kugel (The Bible As It Was) again exerts his considerable command over a wide array of biblical texts and topics to provide a masterful survey of the way ancient Israelites understood God. Biblical texts written around the time of late Judaism, he says, tend to portray God as a universal, omnipresent, but remote deity. Not so with the earliest biblical texts; the Genesis stories about angels or the Exodus commandments against the worship of false gods depict God as a deity who is close to this world and to humanity. Far from being remote, this God hears the cries of the victims of oppression and responds in physical ways by sending the divine presence. So close is the God of old to the people of Israel that this God breaks through the thin veil dividing the spiritual and material world to reveal itself. Thus, this God, according to Kugel, gets close enough to Moses that Moses hears God proclaim the name of the Lord. The prohibition against idols indicates that this God is a different kind of God than those in surrounding cultures, one who appears in a privileged moment and space not confined to a statue. In glimmering prose, Kugel leads us on a mesmerizing tour of the differences between early and modern conceptions of God.

From Booklist
Kugel, a professor of Hebrew Literature at Harvard, delves into the Bible to find the answer to this question: Why is the God of the ancient texts, who walked and talked with the patriarch, so different from the more distant God of today? When did the change take place and why? Kugel suggests that there was a time when Israelites perceived God as near and dear, but that, during the Babylonian exile, he took on a more omniscient role. Named angels such as Gabriel and Michael then came to the fore, preserving a holy personification. Less clear is Kugel's effort to explain his passion for understanding the ancient worship of God in terms of something he calls "the Project," which he defines as a commitment to getting to the bottom of a particular experience, "to see how far it goes." Unlike many biblical scholars, Kugel has an engaging writing style, and although he tends to meander a bit through the centuries, his enthusiasm and insight will attract anyone interested in Old Testament studies. How we cope with grief and come to terms with the death of a loved one shapes our world. In this comprehensive guide to the mourning process, Dr Volkan, a world-recognised authority on grief, shows how each mourning is as individualised as our fingerprints, encoded with our past history of losses. From Publishers Weekly
"The power of unsolved grief" may come not only from death but from change and the pain of losing even that which has caused unhappiness, contends Univeristy of Virginia Medical Center psychiatrist Volkan. Writing with freelancer Zintl and drawing on his own experience and that of others, such as the "complicated" mourning undergone by those close to AIDS victims, Volkan traces bereaved people's progress from denial to acceptance and the necessary "work of mourning" meant to prepare them for reimmersion in life. Therapeutic measures for the bereaved and the people who seek to help them conclude this original and not overly technical approach to surviving grief.

From Library Journal
Volkan, a psychiatrist at the University of Virginia Medical Center, and journalist Zintl analyze our various responses to loss. Their book's first section explores uncomplicated mourning, beginning with the mourner's immediate response to death, followed by his or her assessment and review of the relationship with the deceased, and ending when the mourner moves on from the loss. The second section uses case studies to illustrate complicated mourning and the risk factors that predispose one to it. These include the mourner's experience with past loss(es), his or her emotional ability to tolerate separation, and the particular nature of the relationship between the mourner and the deceased. The final section discusses the use of brief psychotherapy in resolving complicated mourning. This straightforward book will interest the professional and lay reader alike. For most libraries.

From Kirkus Reviews
A psychiatrist reveals what he's learned about how we mourn- -and what happens when we can't. With the assistance of journalist Zintl, Volkan (Psychiatry/University of Virginia Medical Center) details how we deal with what he calls ``uncomplicated'' mourning--the psychological response to the tolerable loss of someone with whom we had little unfinished business. In successful mourning, there is movement from denial to acceptance, followed by an assessment of the relationship with the lost one and a letting-go. Mourning that doesn't progress normally is termed ``complicated'' by Volkan, who looks at the factors that lead to it, such as unfinished business with the deceased, unresolved past losses, external circumstances, and one's particular emotional makeup. Case studies from the author's practice illustrate how people may become stuck in denial, be unable to resolve their loss, and be plunged into depression. Volkan shares his views on how to help the relatively few who require psychotherapy in dealing with grief. He cautions against emotion-muffling drugs and offers his own program of ``regrief'' therapy--a brief but intense form of treatment utilizing objects such as photographs or personal possessions that link the patient to the lost one. But although Volkan directs his words not just to those experiencing grief but also to bereavement counselors and care givers, the information on grief therapy, and specifically on his own regrief therapy, is too scanty to provide much guidance. In a final chapter, the author touches on the link between mourning and creativity. Volkan offers some understanding of a universal human experience, but his therapeutic advice is too brief to be truly useful. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Great book on the importance of data-driven decision making. While I have always been someone that has let the data do the talking, I haven't found an easy way to explain why. Super Crunchers is that easy way! Below I have summarized some of the important points of the book....Super Crunching is crucially about the impact of statistical analysis on real-world decisions. Two core techniques for Super Crunching are the regression and randomization.1. Regression will make your predictions more accurate (Historical approach):It all starts with the use of regressions, and although this method is a basic statistical test of causal relationship it's still a very powerful tool that I need to re-introduce in my analytical life.Regressions make predictions and tell you how precise the prediction is. It tries to hone in on the causal impact of a variable on a dependent. It can tell us the weights to place upon various factors and simultaneously tell us how precisely it was able to estimate these weights.2. Randomization and large sample sizes (Present/Real-Time approach):Reliance on historical data increases the difficulty in discerning causation. Large randomized tests work because the distribution amongst the sample are increasingly identical. Think A/B testing on steroids that allows you to quickly test different combinations! Boils down to the averages of the "treated and untreated" groups.Government has embraced randomization as the best way to test what works. Statistical profiling led to smarter targeting of government supportWith finite amounts of data, we can only estimate a finite number of causal effects3. Neural networkUnlike the regression approach, which estimates the weights to apply to a single equation, the neural approach uses a system of equations represented by a series of interconnected switches.Computers use historical data to train the equation switches to come up with optimal weights. But while the neural technique can yield powerful predictions, it does a poorer job of telling you why it is working or how much confidence it has in its prediction.Super Crunching requires analysis of the results of repeated decisions. If you can't measure what you're trying to maximize, you're not going to be able to rely on data-driven decisions. We humans just overestimate our ability to make good decisions and we're skeptical that a formula that necessarily ignores innumerable pieces of information could do a better job than we could.

Decision making permeates our everyday life. It ranges from the personal to the industrial and commercial where the process becomes costly and critical. Traditionally businesses resorted to intuition and the advice of experts to make a major decision. Lately, however, more and more decision making is relying on data analysis and the use of computer. In this groundbreaking new book, “Super Crunchers”, the author, Ian Ayre, believes that the days of making decisions by relying on intuitions are gone. Today’s best and brightest organizations are analyzing massive databases at lightening speed and gaining greater insights into our human behavior. They are the super crunchers. Companies like Google and Amazon have amassed huge data about our behavior. They know our tastes better than we do, they understand our children’s needs, they know all about the shoes and clothes we buy and wear. They even know how much we’ll pay for our flights and whether the fares will go up or down. They are a new breed of decision makers who are now calling the shots. But how do these companies arrive at such massive information. Obviously, they need a huge amount of data to get comprehensive conclusions, and the data should be as randomized as possible to avoid bias. Interestingly, such data is now available through specialized companies whose business is to collect figures from computer charts, store receipts, company reports and the like, and sell them to researchers. They have data on the size of our shoes, the foods we eat, the medicines we buy, the games we play and even the colors we favor. Once the data is collected, researchers use regression and statistical analysis to evaluate the effect of different variables on a commodity or a behavioral trend, e.g. does music in factories increase productivity? Would a salary raise improve employee loyalty…..? And so on.Putting This new data-analysis approach to many fields has made remarkable improvements. Consider the effect on the medical field. The rise of data-based decision making has reversed conventional wisdom. For example it showed that beta blockers can actually help cardiac patients and that estrogen therapy does not help aging women. Now there is a diagnostic program called “Isabel” which allows physicians to enter a patient’s symptoms into a computer and receive the most likely diagnosis. It will also tell the doctor the possible drug that caused the symptoms. Soon it will even specify the most likely therapy. No wonder many doctors are getting concerned about the possible loss of their control over diagnoses once considered a most important factor in their profession. How are we then to look at this groundbreaking approach to decision making? One cannot dispute its speed and efficiency. It is simply remarkable! Business has put it to beneficial use, but mostly to maximize its profits from the unaware consumers. Medicine stands to gain from it technically while also helping the patient financially and health-wise. But buyer be ware! There are no guarantees and consumers have to view it critically on a case-by-case basis in order to evaluate its risks and benefits.F.R. QUBEINNov. 2017
